It’s better to be a little prepared than to later regret that something was missed. We recommend printing this checklist and keeping it in your glove compartment. In moments of shock, thoughts can get confused - and that’s completely normal. ⸻ 🧰 What you can do in advance ✅ Install a dash camera It can be extremely helpful, especially in hit-and-run situations. ✅ Prepare a folder with documents (insurance, vehicle registration, driver’s license, copies of immigration documents just in case, health insurance) ✅ Save important phone numbers in advance In stressful situations it can be difficult to remember contacts. You may want to save our number in your phone so you can contact us after an accident and receive guidance. ⸻ 🚨 If an accident does happen The most important thing is not to panic. 🔹 1. Safety first Check yourself, your passengers, and other people involved. If there are injuries or the situation is dangerous - call 911 immediately. 🔹 2. Document the scene if it is safe to do so If you are not in danger and can stand safely, take out your phone. Take several photos or a short video of the overall scene: • the position of the vehicles • license plates • the surrounding environment 📍 These first images are often extremely important. ⚠️ Do not risk your safety to take photos. If it’s unsafe, skip this step. 🔹 3. Secure the scene If the vehicles are still drivable and it is possible, move them out of traffic and turn on hazard lights. If not, stay where you are and wait for the police. ❗ Leaving the scene of an accident in California is a serious violation. 🔹 4. Detailed documentation Once the situation is stable, document: • damage to vehicles from different angles • the road, skid marks, debris, weather, lighting • traffic signs and signals • information about the drivers and emergency responders • visible injuries, even if they seem minor In stressful moments it may feel like this isn’t important. But later, these photos and videos often become the most valuable evidence. 🔹 5. Police Even if injuries are not obvious, calling the police is a good idea. An official report records the circumstances of the accident and can be very helpful later. Exchange information: • names, phone numbers, addresses • driver’s licenses • vehicle and insurance information • witness contact details, if there are any ⸻ ⚠️ Important things to remember 🚫 Do not admit fault or apologize. Determining who is at fault happens later - not at the scene. 🩺 Even if you feel fine, see a doctor as soon as possible. Some injuries appear later, and medical records help connect them to the accident. ⚖️ Insurance companies act in their own interests. Before giving statements or recorded interviews, it is wise to consult with an attorney. Sometimes one conversation can help avoid serious mistakes. 💬 Important to know: You should not worry about attorney fees in injury cases.
